What
makes Hemlock Heaven unique? It's not just that it's one of
only a handful of authentic "log cabin" rentals in the area...or the
personal touches of fresh flowers and a ready-to-light fire upon
arrival...or the many cabin comforts that have guests living in "log
cabin luxury." It's also the MASSIVE logs used to build the
cabin. Each log used is 3 to 3.5 feet in diameter!
Starting in July of 2000, Bob Robinson decided to use the already
downed hemlock trees on the property to build a cabin. Bob had
a vision of what a cabin should be, but he didn't have a
homebuilder's skills. He enlisted the help of local builder
Terry Thompson and together they constructed the most unusual log
cabin in the area, using only four logs in the first floor wall.
Following the accidental death of Bob in October of 2000, Terry
Thompson, Toni (Bob's wife) and her sisters Debbie and
Angela, set out to complete the cabin. Thompson built a
beautiful, J-shaped log staircase inside, along with the help of
Robert Strange, a local woodworker, and advice from Banner Elk area
architect, Bob Mann. Family and friends painstakingly sanded
the interior walls to bring out their individual beauty.
The interior was finished with the help of friends and a host of
skilled community members-many donating time or materials.
Completing Bob's vision took many months of searching by Toni for
the perfect antiques and accessories she and Bob had imagined would
make this cabin feel like your home away from home.
Christened in October 2001 and ready for you to enjoy, Hemlock
Heaven may elicit from you that now familiar first impression, "WOW!
Just LOOK at the SIZE of those logs!"
