The High Country
has an extensive list of activities and events for all ages, and
when you stay at Hemlock Heaven, most everything is within 5-20
minutes drive away, with the Blue Ridge Parkway and Blowing Rock
areas less than an hour's drive away!
You'll find the town of Banner Elk with lovely restaurants and
shopping; Grandfather Mountain, featuring the famous swinging
bridge, fantastic views from the top, hiking trails for all levels
and an animal preserve; Valle Crucis, home to the historic Mast
General Store established in 1883; ski mountains--Sugar, Beech,
Hawks Nest and Appalachian Ski Resort; Tweetsie Railroad, an
amusement park for kids; the Blue Ridge Parkway in which you'll
discover Moses Cone Estate and craft center, Julian Price Park and
Price Lake, the Linn Cove Viaduct and more; antique stores on the
main and back roads; and much, much more!
Whatever the season may be, there's always something to do in the
High Country. There are many festivals throughout the year that
bring thousands of visitors to the area. Here are just a few:
Blowing Rock Art in the Park held once a month from May through
October, Highland Games in July at Grandfather Mountain, Wooly Worm
Festival in October in Banner Elk, the Valle County Fair in Valle
Crucis in October. And if you need something physical to keep you
busy, you can try one of the following: golfing, hiking, fishing,
canoeing, river rafting, skiing, snow tubing, snowboarding, gem
mining.
